Seven Investment Management (7IM) has reported that its gold exposure is currently at its highest ever level due to the firm’s “risk off” positioning as a result of perceived elevated risks in the stock market. 7IM’s gold holdings (15.4 tonnes) is now greater than a number of countries including Ireland, United Arab Emirates and the Czech Republic. The discretionary fund manager uses physically backed exchange-traded commodities (ETCs) from Source and iShares to obtain gold exposure in its range of funds and managed portfolios.

London-based ETF Securities has announced it has reduced the management fee charged on the ETFS Physical Swiss Gold ETP (LON: SGBS). Effective immediately, SGBS will charge a management fee of 0.25% per annum, down from its previous cost of 0.29%.

ETF Securities has reported that the 6% oil price rise seen during the week beginning 24 July 2017 has led to outflows of $53 million as ETF/ETP investors took profits. The recent US inventory drawdown was much greater than expected, providing the catalyst for the recent price appreciation.

BlackRock has launched the iShares Diversified Commodity Swap UCITS ETF (LON: ICOM), providing exposure to 20 different commodities from across the energy, agriculture, industrial metals, precious metals and livestock sectors. The fund may appeal to investors looking to diversify their portfolios at a time when the correlation between equities and bonds is rising.

Flows analysis by ETF Securities for the week beginning 17 July 2017 shows that silver was the precious metal of choice for investors as silver ETPs recorded inflows of $17 million compared to outflows of $29m seen by gold ETPs. Nitesh Shah, director, commodity research at ETF Securities, commented: “With continued economic strength, investors have sided with silver as it has higher upside potential in periods of cyclical growth.”

UBS has launched the UBS Bloomberg Commodity CMCI SF (hd to CHF) ETF on the SIX Swiss Exchange, providing currency-hedged exposure to a broad basket of commodity futures.
