ETF Managers Group (ETFMG) has launched a new thematic ETF that was likely inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic. The ETFMG Treatments, Testing and Advancements ETF (GERM US) provides exposure to biotechnology companies that are involved in the research, testing, and treatment of infectious diseases. Sam Masucci, CEO and Founder of ETFMG, commented, “GERM represents an investment theme that is much more than topical, it provides unique exposure to a previously underrepresented growth sector within biotech. We are excited to bring this product to US investors.”

ETFs providing exposure to video gaming and eSports investment themes have enjoyed a boost from the coronavirus pandemic, notching up gains of 33% on average since 20 March, compared to 24% for the S&P 500 (as of 13 May 2020). Inflows have followed with the VanEck Vectors Video Gaming and eSports UCITS ETF (ESPO), a European play on the theme, seeing its assets surge to $221m from just $25m before the crisis.

Court rules in favour of Nasdaq over HACK ETF dispute

A US district court has ruled in favour of Nasdaq in a civil lawsuit against white-label provider ETF Managers Group (ETFMG) over the appropriation of several ETFs including a highly profitable thematic cybersecurity fund now known as the ETFMG Prime Cyber Security ETF (HACK US). ETFMG has been ordered to pay nearly $80 million in compensation and punitive damages.

Global X expands thematic family with cannabis ETF

Global X joins the cannabis party with new thematic ETF

Global X has added a fifteenth fund to its ‘Thematic Growth’ family of ETFs with the launch of the Global X Cannabis ETF (POTX US) on Nasdaq Exchange. The fund tracks the Cannabis Index, calculated by Solactive, which offers a play on the cannabis theme by covering firms that attribute at least 50% of their revenue, operating income, or assets to the marijuana industry.
