Gold in vogue amid high grade bond demise

The fund will become GSAM's first commodity ETF.

Gold is making a comeback this year as high grade bond yields fall. Gold ETPs have benefited from inflows of around $21bn in the first six months of the year, which is in stark contrast to last year when the asset class saw redemptions of $3.4bn, according to a report from WisdomTree. The precious metal, which is now trading at around $1,319 an ounce (up 24% since the beginning of the year) enables investors to diversify their multi-asset portfolios because of its negative correlation with equities and bonds. Its renewed interest has also extended to the precious metals sector.

WisdomTree Europe warns of future volatility in oil ETPs

ETPs linked to the performance of oil futures have enjoyed significant gains over the past five months as the commodity has rallied from multi-year lows. The possibility of further gains, according to WisdomTree Europe, may be optimistic as the commodity is trading broadly in line with its fundamentals. Viktor Nossek, Director of Research at WisdomTree Europe, commented: “It was easy for investors to be bullish when oil traded below $30, but given the scale of the recovery we have seen in the last four months, it is hard to make the case that oil looks undervalued now. Indeed, the recovery means it is now in line with its long-term historic price.”

WisdomTree launches three inverse fixed income ETPs

Exchange-traded product provider Boost ETP, a WisdomTree Europe company, has listed three new ETPs on the London Stock Exchange. The three funds offer investors leveraged exposure to the VIX Index, as well as leveraged and short exposure to emerging market equity. Viktor Nossek, Director of Research at WisdomTree Europe, said: “This years’ volatility underpinned by China’s slowdown and slumping commodities has soured sentiment in risk assets, forcing global growth expectations down and creating opportunities to position bearishly in equities…These new products provide investors with a new set of momentum and hedging opportunities within the Boost S&L ETP range.”

Gilt ETFs rally as UK 10-year bond yield hits record low

UK government sells negative-interest gilts for first time

The yield on 10-year UK government bonds (gilts) reached an all-time low of 1.22% on Thursday, driven by a lower probability of a June interest-rate increase by the US Federal Reserve, a shift in sentiment towards risk-off assets on the back of stronger indications that the UK might vote for Brexit, and continued asset-purchase programmes. Owing to the inverse relationship between interest rates and bond prices, gilt exchange-traded funds have provided attractive returns in 2016 as 10-year rates began the year at roughly 2%. The Lyxor FTSE Actuaries UK GILTS (DR) UCITS ETF (GILS), the cheapest gilt ETF on the market, has returned 7.6% year-to-date.

Is a bear market on the horizon for S&P 500 ETFs?

Tradeweb reports strong selling of European equity ETFs during November

The S&P 500 Index, one of the most widely followed indices in the world and a bellwether for the US economy, has recorded a turbulent start to the year, prompting market watchers to believe the index is poised to suffer a sharp decline. The index – acting as a reference for several hugely popular ETFs, including the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) – has dropped 10.5% from its opening value this year of 2044 to its lowest point YTD of 1829 on 11th Feb. Despite a brief recovery in the market – where it gained 14.6% from its February low to 31 May 2016 – investors who endured the ride would still have only netted a 2.6% increase in capital value. An examination of fundamental and technical factors may suggest the widely-followed index may be due a correction.

HANetf surpasses $1 billion in assets under management as EMQQ and BTCE power past $200m

WisdomTree has announced that it has bought the outstanding 25% share in the European exchange traded platform as it looks to continue growing in Europe. The buyout follows the US provider’s initial 75% purchase in January 2014, and entry to the European market, with the obligation to buy out the remaining minority investment within four years. The move will see Boost ETP’s founders, Hector McNeil and Nik Bienkowski leave. The WisdomTree Europe platform now has around $940 million in assets under management, a 1,780% increase from its initial base of $50 million in 2014. McNeil and Bienkowski, Co-CEOs of Boost, said: “WisdomTree is a truly innovative and dynamic ETF manager with a bright future.”
