WisdomTree: How to trade the Brent/WTI oil spread using short and leveraged ETPs

Following the announcement of a joint deal by OPEC and a group of non-OPEC countries to restrict the production of oil supply in Q1 and Q2 2017, members of Nikko Asset Management’s global oil research team have entered into a roundtable discussion to comment on the perceived impact of the deal on oil prices and the incentives for select countries to ‘cheat’ on the arrangement. With technological advances allowing the US to become an increasingly important player in the market, the dialogue turns to the country’s potential to capture market share and become a swing producer going forward.

By Nick Leung, Research Analyst at WisdomTree:

“Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the US Presidential election caught many ETF investors out, as risk assets surprised to the upside and safe havens routed in the aftermath. WisdomTree’s Boost range of short and leveraged exchange traded notes has revealed that investors trying to protect themselves against an expected post-Trump sell-off actually missed out on further gains in US equities, which now sit at fresh record highs following upward moves of 3.0%.”

WisdomTree: How to trade the Brent/WTI oil spread using short and leveraged ETPs

By Nick Leung, Research Analyst at WisdomTree:

“It’s coming down the wire. The upcoming OPEC Vienna meeting this week may represent yet another change to the status quo for 2016, with the cartel possibly cementing its first production cut in eight years and completing a dramatic shift in strategy. We believe that whilst this may present short-term tactical opportunities for oil investors, long-term positioning remains a challenge.”

FTSE 100 ETFs set to ditch housebuilder Berkeley Group

Index provider FTSE Russell has announced constituent changes to the FTSE 100 Index, the flagship reference for large-cap blue-chip stocks listed on the London Stock Exchange. The latest quarterly review will see only one member of the index being replaced, UK housebuilder Berkeley Group in favour of precious metals miner Polymetal International, but will still trigger re-balancing activity in exchange-traded funds that track the index, such as the giant iShares Core FTSE 100 UCITS ETF (ISF). It will also make such ETFs even less UK-oriented.

Volatility Shares launches inverse mid-term VIX ETF

A note from S&P Dow Jones Indices suggests that the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) could be poised to increase sharply from this week, citing seasonal trends as well as expectations derived from the VIX futures curve. For investors looking to protect their portfolios from rising volatility, VIX-linked exchange-traded products, such as the Boost S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures 2.25x Leverage Daily ETP (VIXL), could provide an effective hedge. Similarly, for traders with shorter time horizons the current calm could present an opportunity to take out speculative long positions in such products, which would profit from an increase in volatility.

According to research from ETF provider WisdomTree Europe, investors have pulled out of oil ETPs to the tune of $2.4bn since March, a stark contrast to earlier inflows of $2.6bn at the start of the year.
