BMO cuts fees on five equity and fixed income ETFs

Canadian investment fund manager BMO Asset Management has cut its fees on five ETFs providing access to the broad Canadian fixed income market, regular and currency hedged exposures to the S&P 500, and investment in the short-term Canadian corporate bond market. The reduction in fees of two ETFs, the BMO Aggregate Bond Index ETF and BMO Discount Bond Index ETF, from 0.20% to 0.09% has earned BMO the title of the lowest-cost provider of fixed income ETFs in Canada.The lower fees will come into effect as of 22 June 2016.

Toronto Stock Exchange reach milestone of 400 listed ETFs

Toronto Stock Exchange has surpassed a significant milestone this week with more than 400 exchange traded funds now listed on its platform. The number of ETFs listed on the exchange has more than doubled since 2011, bringing the total market capitalization to approximately $106 billion as of 30 April 2016. To celebrate the achievement, ETF industry participants joined Shaun McIver, Chief Client Officer, Equity Capital Markets, TMX Group to open trading on 4 May 2016.

BMO Global Asset Management has rolled out four new exchange-traded funds on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx). The funds seek to broaden the scope of ETFs available to local investors, which have thus far tended to be fairly homogeneous and largely focused on China-based exposures. BMO made its ETF debut in Hong Kong in November 2014 with the introduction of three funds structured to help address the demand for income and growth and access to the region’s robust financial sector. Its latest ETFs build on this platform by providing investors with access to important international exposures, including the Nasdaq 100, Asia Pacific real estate, and Japanese and European equities. The latter two being USD hedged.

Global asset manager and exchange traded fund provider BMO Asset Management has added to its smart beta range with the launch of two new currency-hedged low volatility funds. The ETFs are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and provide a solution to investors looking to navigate choppy markets and work by applying higher weights to constituents with lower historical betas (a measure of the firm’s sensitivity to broad market returns). “These new listings build on our successful suite of low volatility ETFs and are structured to help manage the highs and lows of the markets,” said Kevin Gopaul, Chief Investment Officer and Senior Vice President, BMO Asset Management.

BMO launches SmartFolio, an ETF-based robo-advisor for Canadian investors

BMO Wealth Management, the fund management division of the Canadian-headquartered bank, has expanded its suite of investment services available to Canadian Investors with the launch of SmartFolio. The service requires a minimum investment of CAD 5,000 and uses a questionnaire to determine the user’s investment goals and risk tolerance. The investor is then assigned to one of five ETF-based portfolios most closely suiting their objectives.

VanEck launches two high yield corporate bond ETF on London Stock Exchange

London Stock Exchange (LSE), a major listing destination for exchange-traded funds in Europe, experienced their strongest month for listing activity since 2011; a total of 46 new funds were launched during November. The action during November, which included the introduction of the first ever Indian fixed income ETF as well the arrival of BMO Global Asset Management (BMO) as a European issuer, brings the total amount of listings this year to 152 ETFs and 55 ETPs.

Canada’s ETF industry set for continued growth

The Canadian exchange-traded fund industry stood at $70.1 billion in assets under management at the mid-way point of the year, according to a report from BMO Global Asset Management. Assets are up 11.1 percent from year-end 2013, led by fixed income ETFs with more than $2.5 billion of inflows. Rajiv Silgardo, Co-CEO, BMO Global Asset Management: said: “We expect the momentum into ETFs to continue at a rapid pace, as more investors use more ETFs to build better portfolios.”
