Societe Generale has launched a series of 74 inverse and leveraged ETPs on London Stock Exchange. The product suite provides investors with leveraged daily long and short exposures to commodities, currency pairs and mainstream equity indices.
Zak de Mariveles, managing director and head of UK IFA sales, Societe Generale, commented, “With over £2.8bn traded over the London Stock Exchange last year, leveraged ETPs are a popular way to gain leverage to a wide range of popular underlyers.
“Societe Generale benefits from a solid expertise in providing ETPs across Europe. By broadening our offering in the UK, we look forward to providing sophisticated retail and professional investors that seek to gain leverage within their portfolios with an even greater choice and flexibility.”
The 38 commodity-based products track the daily price movements of natural gas, WTI oil, copper, silver and gold, and come with leverage factors of 2X, 3X and 5X for each underlying exposure. The ETPs mainly trade in USD although the 5X leverage exposures are available in both USD and GBP.
The 12 currency-based launches allow investors to take leveraged long or short positions on the dollar versus the euro, pound sterling or yen. The ETPs, which trade in USD, include 3X and 5X leverage factors for each currency pair.
The remaining 24 ETPs offer daily leveraged long and short exposures to the FTSE 100, Dax, Euro Stoxx 50 and S&P 500 indices. The funds come with a mix of 2X, 3X and 5X leverage factors, and are available in a mix of USD, GBP and EUR trading currencies.
Societe Generale’s extensive range of new ETPs brings competition to a space that was previously dominated by WisdomTree and ETF Securities—which has now been bought by WisdomTree.
WisdomTree’s “Boost” ETP range offers daily leveraged long and short exposures to similar underlying investments as Societe Generale, but also to several other tradeable commodities, including Brent Crude oil and palladium, and to equity indices such as the FTSE Mib, Nasdaq, Topix and MSCI Emerging Markets Index. WisdomTree’s range also allows investors to take leveraged trades on the VIX Volatility Index and fixed income instruments such Gilts, Treasuries and German Bunds.
ETF Securities, now owned by WisdomTree, offer an extensive range of similar products themselves, with several more commodity offerings, including short and leveraged exposures to corn, cocoa, coffee and aluminium. ETFS also offer products for the CAC and FTSE China equity indices, as well as several euro-traded currency pairs.
Inverse and leveraged funds provide an efficient means for sophisticated traders to obtain tactical exposures; however, they are generally considered unsuitable for retail investors who may not fully understand the risks involved.
The funds tend to decay in value if held for an extended period of time, potentially leading to significant losses especially in volatile but range-bound markets. This characteristic generally increases with the degree of leverage involved. Gains and losses are compounded over periods of more than one trading day, and as such will deviate from the leveraged performance of the underlying asset.
