The ETF Strategy 250 Select is a proprietary list of 250 US-listed ETFs curated through a rigorous,
multi-checkpoint quantitative and qualitative review process. Designed for real-world portfolio
construction from the perspective of professional wealth allocators—our primary user group—the
list provides representation across major asset classes and subcategories, offering a balanced
mix of core beta exposures, style-tilted strategies, and alternatively weighted approaches. To
ensure professional relevance, the allocation of ETFs within each asset class is guided by the
investable Global Market Portfolio framework.
Selection Approach
ETFs are identified and evaluated on an ongoing basis. While the selection process is primarily
guided by the ETF Strategy Fund Grade framework, final inclusion is determined by a governance
committee to ensure oversight and consistency.
Selected ETFs typically represent the highest-rated funds within their respective allocation groups.
In maintaining the list, ETF Strategy evaluates several key performance and operational indicators:
- Liquidity & Tradability: Secondary market volume and ease of execution.
- Capacity & Scalability: The fund's ability to manage significant inflows without strategy degradation.
- Performance & Risk: Analysis of historical risk-adjusted returns and volatility.
- Track Record & Implementation: Quality of index tracking, replication efficiency, and management experience.
- Costs: Management fees and total cost of ownership.
- Viability: Long-term stability of the fund and the institutional strength of its sponsor.
- Investor demand: Addressable buyer set and allocation intent.
The weighting of these criteria is dynamic and may vary by asset class, strategy type, or prevailing market conditions. Issuer diversity
is also considered; in tie-break instances, an ETF may be selected over a peer to ensure broader representation of providers across the list.
Monitoring and Maintenance
The list is reviewed quarterly, with constituents added, removed, or replaced based on material changes to liquidity, performance, fees, index
methodology, investment process, issuer organizational structure, or investor demand. Ad hoc reviews may be triggered by significant market events.
To maintain structural stability, the objective is to keep turnover low. An ETF will only be substituted when a clearly superior alternative is
identified that demonstrates a consistent advantage over the incumbent based on the ETF Strategy Fund Grade score and the Committee's qualitative assessment.
