Constituents are selected by ranking the dividend-paying universe on a composite of cash flow to total debt, ROE, dividend yield and 5-year dividend growth, targeting the top 100 by score. The index applies modified market-cap weighting with a 4.0% cap per security and a 25% cap per sector at each review. The composition is reviewed annually to refresh membership and rebalanced quarterly to maintain caps and weights.

Investment Proposition

Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) delivers exposure to U.S. equities selected for consistent dividend payments and fundamental strength, seeking a blend of income durability and total-return potential. The strategy applies rules-based quality screens and dividend sustainability metrics around cash flow, returns on capital, and payout reliability, resulting in a concentrated portfolio emphasizing established businesses. This typically produces a tilt toward quality and value factors, with sector weights that can differ from the broad market. Key characteristics include a focus on dividend persistence, potential resilience during profit slowdowns, and sensitivity to interest-rate moves. Portfolio role and use cases include a core dividend-equity sleeve for income mandates, a quality-tilt satellite alongside broad market exposure, and a framework for investors seeking a rules-based dividend approach. Suitable investor profiles include income allocators building enduring equity income streams, and multi-factor equity strategies using quality and profitability tilts. Regime behavior may be supported during moderate growth or declining-rate environments, and can be challenged during speculative, non-dividend-led rallies. A fund-specific risk to monitor is concentration driven by the selection methodology, which can heighten exposure to particular sectors or constituents.
