The underlying Nasdaq-100 Ex-Tech Sector Index targets all Nasdaq-100 constituents not classified in the ICB Technology sector, retaining the Nasdaq-100’s non-financial eligibility screens and quarterly maintenance cadence. Constituents are equal-weighted at each quarterly rebalance (March, June, September, December); for issuers represented by multiple share classes, the issuer’s equal “issuer weight” is split equally across its included lines. Between rebalances, standard Nasdaq corporate-action adjustments apply; there are no additional selection scores or style tilts beyond the sector exclusion. Membership updates flow through the Nasdaq-100’s annual reconstitution and periodic adds/drops, after which any technology names are excluded and the remainder comprise the index. This design removes tech beta while preserving large-cap growth exposure in the other Nasdaq-100 sectors.

Investment Proposition

First Trust NASDAQ-100 Ex-Technology Sector Index Fund (QQXT) provides large-cap U.S. equity exposure to the innovative companies of the NASDAQ-100 while intentionally excluding the technology sector to reduce single-sector dominance. The strategy follows a transparent rules-based process that removes technology names and redistributes weight across the remaining sectors, helping moderate concentration risk and align the portfolio more closely with diversified growth drivers such as consumer, health care, industrials, and communication services. Resulting factor characteristics often blend quality and growth with episodic value and defensive tilts depending on sector mix and rebalances, producing performance that can diverge materially from technology-heavy benchmarks. The fund tends to benefit when market leadership broadens beyond mega-cap tech and when domestic demand and health care innovation are supportive; it may lag in narrow tech-led rallies. Use cases include a satellite diversifier within a NASDAQ allocation, a concentration hedge for tech-heavy portfolios, and factor completion for growth sleeves. Suitable investors include allocators seeking NASDAQ exposure with reduced tech cyclicality and tactical managers rotating toward non-tech secular winners. Key risk: methodology-driven sector tilts can introduce tracking and style drift versus headline NASDAQ benchmarks.
