The underlying ICE Exchange-Listed Fixed & Adjustable Rate Non-Financial Preferred Securities Index targets U.S. exchange-listed preferreds issued by non-financial corporations, including $25/$50/$100 par fixed- and adjustable-rate preferred stock, hybrid debt, and convertible preferreds. Eligible securities must have ≥ USD 250m face amount outstanding, be listed on NYSE or Nasdaq, and show at least 250,000 shares average monthly consolidated trading volume over the prior six months. Financial sector issuers (banks, brokers, insurers, diversified financials) are excluded. Constituents are market-value weighted without issuer caps, so outstanding size and float directly drive weights. The index is reviewed and rebalanced monthly, effective the last calendar day; membership and shares outstanding are determined on the third business day before the last business day of the month, minimizing staleness while tightly controlling turnover.

Investment Proposition

VanEck Preferred Securities ex Financials ETF (PFXF) delivers a rules-based basket of preferred and hybrid securities while intentionally excluding bank and broader financial issuers to diversify sector risk. The strategy targets income from fixed-rate, fixed-to-floating, and other preferred structures issued by utilities, industrials, energy infrastructure, real estate, and communications companies, balancing credit quality with interest-rate sensitivity. Returns are driven by duration, call features, and credit spreads; coupons can support income objectives, while price volatility can reflect rate moves and issuer fundamentals. Style exposures typically lean toward value and carry, with embedded optionality from call provisions. In portfolios, it can serve as an income sleeve, a diversifier versus traditional financial-heavy preferred allocations, or a liability-aware component for outcome-oriented mandates. Suitable investors include income-focused allocators seeking sector diversification and multi-asset managers constructing balanced cash-flow streams. It may be favored when rates are stable or declining and credit conditions are benign, and more challenged during rapid rate rises or widening spreads. A key risk to monitor is call and extension risk, which can affect realized yield and total return.
