The underlying Bloomberg Commodity Balanced WTI Crude Oil Index provides rules-based exposure to West Texas Intermediate crude oil via long positions in CME futures. The index holds three distinct WTI contract schedules—monthly, June-annual and December-annual—each targeted at 33.33% of index weight and reset on the first business day of March and September. Within each schedule, futures are rolled from the lead to the next contract over the second and third business days of the roll month, transferring 50% of notional each day. Index levels reflect the excess return from futures price changes, with a companion total return series adding collateral yield on cash. If any covered WTI futures contract trades or settles at or below USD 10, the index undergoes an extraordinary review and may shift contract selection or roll lengths, with weights rebalanced accordingly.

Investment Proposition

ProShares K-1 Free Crude Oil Strategy ETF (OILK) provides targeted exposure to crude oil prices through a diversified mix of futures contracts positioned along the curve rather than relying solely on the nearest month. The strategy seeks to manage the carry and roll dynamics that often drive futures returns, using a disciplined approach to balance exposure between short-dated and longer-dated contracts while maintaining collateral in high-quality cash instruments. This design emphasizes the structural drivers of oil—supply discipline, inventory trends, and demand cycles—acknowledging that term structure can either cushion or amplify spot moves. Risk and return are primarily tied to commodity volatility and curve shape; income is incidental, and equity-like factors are limited. Portfolio roles include an inflation or energy-beta sleeve, a tactical overlay for macro views on crude, and a diversifier that behaves differently from traditional stocks and bonds. Suitable profiles include allocators using time-segmented or thematic sleeves and macro-oriented strategies seeking commodity risk premia. Environments with tightening supply or rising inflation expectations tend to favor it; global growth slowdowns or steep contango can challenge it. Key risk: roll and basis effects versus spot.
