The underlying Nuveen ESG International Developed Markets Equity Index delivers optimized exposure to developed markets ex-U.S. and Canada, starting from the MSCI EAFE parent. It excludes issuers failing MSCI ESG Ratings/Controversies coverage and screens for business involvement (e.g., civilian firearms producers; controversial weapons; defined revenue thresholds in tobacco, alcohol, gambling, nuclear power, and conventional weapons) and applies a carbon screen that removes the highest carbon-intensity names until the index’s total carbon intensity is below a preset limit. Constituents are selected via optimization to minimize active risk versus the parent subject to constraints: predicted tracking error 3%; minimum weight 0.01%; single-stock active weight ±1.25% and ≤10× parent weight; issuer active ≤1.25%; sector active ±4% (Energy ±8%); country active ±3%; one-way turnover ≤5% in Feb/Aug and ≤20% in May/Nov. The index rebalances quarterly in February, May, August, and November.

Investment Proposition

Nuveen ESG International Developed Markets Equity ETF (NUDM) provides broad exposure to large- and mid-cap companies across developed markets outside the U.S. while applying a rules-based environmental, social and governance framework. The strategy excludes business activities that conflict with common ESG standards and emphasizes issuers with stronger ESG profiles, aiming to preserve diversified country and sector representation. It targets long-term capital appreciation through transparent selection and weighting, resulting in a portfolio that can tilt toward quality and lower-controversy characteristics relative to conventional benchmarks. Return drivers include global earnings cycles, currency movements versus the U.S. dollar, and policy dynamics in key non-U.S. economies; performance may be supported when international equities re-rate or when a weaker dollar boosts foreign returns, and challenged during U.S.-led narrow leadership. Portfolio roles include core international developed equity, values alignment within policy portfolios, and factor completion for investors seeking ESG integration outside the U.S. Suitable investors include institutions implementing strategic ESG mandates and advisors building globally diversified cores. Key risk to monitor is tracking variance from broad international markets due to exclusions and ESG reweighting.
