The underlying Research Affiliates Deletions Index targets U.S. micro-, small-, and mid-cap value stocks that have been removed from large-capitalization market-cap indices and subsequently screened for quality. Two cap-weighted parent indices, representing the top 500 and top 1000 U.S. companies by market cap, define the large and large–mid universes from which deletions are tracked over a rolling five-year window. Companies that have disappeared from either parent index are eligible if they now reside in the smaller-cap segment and pass a composite quality screen based on debt coverage, equity and debt issuance, leverage change, and multi-year payout and net payout ratios. Names in the bottom 20% by quality score are excluded. Eligible deletions are held for up to five years unless they migrate back into a parent index or fail the quality screen. The index is equally weighted and rebalanced annually after the May month-end selection date.

Investment Proposition

Research Affiliates Deletions ETF (NIXT) targets a contrarian equity opportunity set by focusing on U.S. companies removed from major market-capitalization-based benchmarks, aiming to capture potential long-horizon mean-reversion after forced selling and index turnover. The strategy employs a rules-driven, value-oriented selection approach with quality considerations to mitigate classic value-trap risks, generally emphasizing micro, small, and mid-cap segments where dislocations can be more pronounced. Return drivers are tied to valuation normalization, operational improvement, and reduced index-related selling pressure, with cyclicality linked to credit conditions, profitability trends, and risk appetite for smaller companies. Expect higher idiosyncratic and liquidity risk than broad-market exposures, alongside meaningful factor tilts toward value and size that can diverge from growth-led markets. As a portfolio tool, NIXT can serve as a factor completion sleeve for value and size, a satellite allocation for contrarian equity, or a tactical overlay when market breadth improves. Suitable investors include diversified equity allocators seeking differentiated alpha sources and systematic value practitioners. A fund-specific risk to monitor is capacity and liquidity management across smaller constituents, which can influence implementation costs.
