The underlying Morningstar US Broad Value Wide Moat Focus Index provides US equity exposure to value-oriented companies in the Morningstar US Market Index that hold a Morningstar Economic Moat Rating of wide and trade at relatively low market price to Morningstar fair value ratios. The universe is limited to stocks under active Morningstar analyst coverage, and all constituents must carry a wide moat designation at entry to avoid traditional value traps. At each review, the index ranks eligible wide-moat value stocks by price/fair value and selects those with the largest discounts, typically favouring mid- and large-capitalisation issuers. The index holds 60 stocks split into two 30-stock sub-portfolios, each reconstituted and reweighted semi-annually on a staggered schedule in March and September, and June and December. Within each sub-portfolio, larger valuation discounts translate into higher target weights, while diversification constraints prevent excessive concentration in any single issuer or sector.

Investment Proposition

VanEck Morningstar Wide Moat Value ETF (MVAL) presents exposure to U.S. companies with durable competitive advantages trading at more attractive relative valuations. The strategy blends quality with value by emphasizing profitability, capital discipline, and assessed moat durability, typically producing a selective portfolio that can diverge from traditional value mixes. Style exposure skews toward profitable franchises where mean-reversion and margin resilience may support returns, with income characteristics shaped by sector composition rather than yield targeting. The fund can benefit during value recoveries, reflationary periods, and environments rewarding cash-flow robustness; it may face headwinds in momentum-driven growth surges or when low-quality rallies lead. Use cases include a core value sleeve emphasizing business quality, a complement to growth-tilted allocations for balance across styles, and a factor-completion tool to enhance profitability within value exposure. Suitable investors include institutions seeking quality-anchored value and advisors implementing barbell or core-satellite frameworks. A key risk to monitor is thesis durability: concentration in franchises judged attractively valued can underperform if competitive advantages erode or if catalysts for value realization are delayed.
