The underlying ICE Long AMT-Free Broad National Municipal Index targets the long-maturity segment of the U.S. tax-exempt municipal bond market. Eligible bonds are USD-denominated, investment-grade issues from U.S. states, territories, and their political subdivisions; private-activity bonds subject to AMT are excluded. The universe spans general obligation, revenue, prerefunded/escrowed-to-maturity, insured, lease obligations, when-issued, and zero-coupon structures. Constituents are market-value weighted by current amount outstanding, with new issues and corporate actions reflected at month-end. The long segment is defined by ICE’s maturity bucket for extended terms, so interest-rate exposure is materially longer than broad muni aggregates. Index maintenance follows ICE’s monthly rebalancing cycle (effective at month-end), with defaults and fallen-below-investment-grade names removed at the next rebalance; ratings use a composite approach when multiple agency grades exist.

Investment Proposition

VanEck Long Muni ETF (MLN) provides broad exposure to long-maturity, investment-grade municipal bonds, targeting federally tax-exempt income with a deliberate extension of duration for investors seeking greater interest-rate sensitivity and potential income versus shorter muni options. The strategy uses a transparent, rules-driven selection of general obligation and revenue bonds across issuers and sectors, maintaining diversified state exposure and typically low turnover consistent with broad muni portfolios. Performance reflects tax-exempt carry and roll-down, along with movements in the long end of the yield curve and muni credit spreads; results can deviate from expectations when curve shape or supply dynamics shift. MLN can play a duration-extension role for liability-aware investors, support barbell structures alongside short duration holdings, or serve as a strategic sleeve for maximizing tax-exempt income potential. Suitable profiles include high-income taxpayers aligning assets with long-dated liabilities and allocators expressing curve views in a diversified, tax-efficient framework. Favorable backdrops include stable or declining long rates and constructive municipal balance sheets; sharp increases in real yields or curve bear-steepening are more challenging. A key risk is elevated duration and convexity, which can magnify price volatility.
