The underlying S&P Kensho Smart Factories Index offers thematic exposure to U.S.-listed companies supplying technologies that digitalize manufacturing. A natural language processing engine scans recent regulatory filings for phrases linked to industrial internet of things, digital twins, process sensing and monitoring, predictive maintenance, industrial machine vision and factory energy optimization. Companies whose descriptions match these activities are reviewed and classified as core, where smart-factory activities represent a significant share of operations, or non-core, where they are important but less dominant. After applying standard S&P liquidity and free-float screens, core and non-core groups are each initially equal-weighted, then the aggregate weight of the core group is increased so core stocks receive higher overall index weight. Constituents and classifications are re-evaluated annually each May, with an additional systematic weight adjustment, but not full reselection, conducted each November.

Investment Proposition

ProShares S&P Kensho Smart Factories ETF (MAKX) targets companies advancing industrial automation, robotics, machine vision, additive manufacturing, and industrial IoT that underpin modern production systems. The methodology focuses on enablers of factory digitization—sensors, controllers, software, and precision components—alongside select integrators, aiming to capture productivity gains and capex cycles associated with re-tooling and reshoring. It seeks long-term growth by holding a rules-based basket whose fundamentals can reflect durable moats in installed bases and switching costs, while accepting cyclicality tied to global manufacturing and inventory adjustments. Factor exposures may blend quality (mission-critical hardware/software) with growth (emerging platforms), and macro sensitivity can be highest during expansions, capex upswings, and cost-rationalization phases when automation adoption accelerates. Portfolio roles include a thematic satellite within an industrials/technology sleeve, a tactical overlay to express views on productivity waves, and a factor-completion tool for innovation exposure within otherwise value-tilted allocations. Suitable investors include allocators pursuing secular productivity themes and balanced portfolios seeking targeted exposure to automation demand. Key risk: dependence on corporate capex and rapid technology shifts can compress order books and margins through downturns or platform transitions.
