The underlying BlackRock Inflation Hedged Corporate Bond Index targets the return of a USD investment grade corporate bond portfolio while neutralizing inflation. The index holds a fixed number of shares of the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF, preserving exposure to large, liquid USD corporate bonds selected under that ETF’s amount-outstanding and liquidity screens. To hedge, the index overlays up to 10 CPI-linked inflation swap contracts across key maturities; swap notionals are recalculated each business day so the present value of expected CPI on the bond sleeve is offset, and a cash position is maintained to collateralize the swaps. The credit, spread and curve characteristics of the corporate bond exposure therefore remain intact. The swap basket is rolled monthly, while the ETF sleeve updates when the underlying corporate-bond index conducts its regular month-end reconstitution.

Investment Proposition

iShares Inflation Hedged Corporate Bond ETF (LQDI) targets investment-grade U.S. corporate bond exposure while systematically offsetting inflation-expectations risk through a derivatives overlay linked to consumer-price dynamics. The construct aims to preserve the income and credit-spread profile of high-quality corporates, while reducing sensitivity to shifts in breakeven inflation so that returns are driven more by real rates and credit conditions. This can help when inflation surprises or supply-side shocks lift price expectations, while still leaving the portfolio exposed to credit beta and real-rate moves. Roles include an income sleeve designed to mitigate purchasing-power erosion, an inflation-aware core credit allocation for liability-minded investors, and a tactical tool to separate credit views from inflation views during regime transitions. Suitable investors include institutions seeking real-value preservation within credit mandates, and multi-asset allocators aiming to maintain corporate exposure without directly owning inflation-linked bonds. LQDI tends to benefit when credit fundamentals are stable and inflation risk is volatile, and may lag when inflation cools yet real rates rise. Key risk to monitor: hedge basis and implementation costs that can dilute carry if overlays imperfectly match bond duration.
