The underlying Northern Trust US Long Corporate Bond Quality Value Index targets U.S. dollar-denominated investment grade corporate bonds with long (≥10-year) maturities while tilting toward issuers scored attractively on value and quality. Eligible securities are SEC-registered or Rule 144A public issues of senior or subordinated corporate debt with final maturity of at least 10 years, minimum BBB-/Baa3 composite rating, and at least 250 million USD outstanding; covered bonds and issues lacking reliable external pricing are excluded. From this universe, an optimizer maximizes a Composite Alpha that blends proprietary value and quality scores while keeping effective duration close to the eligible universe. Constraints cap each issuer at 3% weight, each bond at no more than five times its eligible-universe weight, sectors within ±10% of universe exposure, and duration buckets within ±3%. Index turnover at each monthly review is constrained to 10% or less, with changes implemented at month-end.

Investment Proposition

FlexShares Credit-Scored US Long Corporate Bond Index Fund (LKOR) offers long-maturity, investment-grade U.S. corporate exposure using a systematic quality-and-value credit scoring framework. The approach favors issuers exhibiting stronger solvency profiles and comparatively attractive valuations, concentrating the portfolio’s return drivers in long-duration interest-rate sensitivity and credit spreads while seeking to avoid weaker balance sheets. With a focus on the long end of the curve, the strategy amplifies duration’s diversification potential versus equities and enhances responsiveness to policy shifts, but it can be more volatile during rapid yield increases or steepening episodes. Use cases include liability-aware sleeves, duration extension as part of a barbell with short-duration assets, or a satellite allocation to augment aggregate exposure with targeted corporate term risk. It tends to be timely when inflation trends are moderating and rate-cut or curve-stability narratives prevail; sustained rate shocks or deteriorating corporate fundamentals can be headwinds. Suitable investors include institutions managing long-horizon liabilities and allocators implementing rate-sensitive tilts in risk-parity or balanced models. Key risk to monitor: elevated interest-rate exposure at long maturities, which can dominate total returns during adverse rate regimes.
