The underlying BlackRock iBonds 1-5 Year TIPS Ladder Index provides laddered exposure to US Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities over five consecutive maturity years by holding five iShares iBonds Oct Term TIPS ETFs as its only constituents. Each underlying fund tracks a market-value-weighted portfolio of US TIPS whose final maturities fall within a single calendar year, so the ladder spans a rolling 1–5 year real-duration segment of the Treasury market. At each annual reconstitution, the term ETF closest to termination is removed, a new ETF with the fifth-year maturity is added, and the five ETFs are reset to equal weights, after which weights drift with relative performance. The index is therefore driven by the index-provider rules of the underlying term TIPS indices while constraining overall inflation-linked exposure, maturity profile and credit risk strictly to US Treasury obligations.

Investment Proposition

iShares iBonds 1-5 Year TIPS Ladder ETF (LDRI) delivers a laddered approach to U.S. Treasury inflation-protected securities across five consecutive maturity years by investing in underlying iBonds funds that roll annually to keep the 1–5 year structure intact. The objective is to preserve short-duration real rate exposure while directly linking principal to inflation changes, allowing investors to seek protection against unexpected price shocks without committing to longer-dated real yields. Returns depend on movements in real rates and realized inflation; environments with firm inflation or rising inflation expectations can be supportive, while falling inflation or sharp increases in real yields can weigh on results. Potential roles include an inflation-aware ballast within core fixed income, a dedicated real-return sleeve for liability-conscious investors, and a diversification tool alongside nominal Treasuries and short-term credit. Suitable investors include multi-asset allocators aiming to stabilize purchasing power and policy-sensitive portfolios that manage front-end rate risk. A fund-specific risk to monitor is negative carry when inflation moderates relative to prevailing real yields, which can reduce the benefit of the inflation linkage at the short end.
