Eligible contracts are December-expiry current-year and next-year futures that meet ≥ USD 10m average monthly traded volume over the prior six months. Constituents are weighted by trading volume, with diversification controls: any single region capped at 65% and each program maintained at ≥10% weight; when a program’s rebalanced weight is ≥20%, 5% is assigned to its next-year December contract to manage roll and term structure. Only the most liquid contracts per program are used. The index is calculated daily and rebalanced annually, with membership and weights updated at the scheduled rebalance to reflect the latest liquidity and cap rules.

Investment Proposition

KraneShares Global Carbon Strategy ETF (KRBN) provides targeted exposure to the price of regulated carbon allowances via a diversified basket of exchange-traded futures tied to major cap-and-trade programs. The strategy seeks to capture the structural supply–demand dynamics governing emissions permits, using a rules-based approach to allocate across programs and roll contracts to maintain liquid exposure. Return potential is linked to policy trajectories, allowance scarcity and industrial activity; performance may diverge from broad commodities and equities, offering differentiated risk and diversification characteristics. The fund’s futures implementation embeds carry and roll considerations that can either augment or detract from spot trends, with behavior that tends to be more policy-sensitive than cyclical commodity beta. Use cases include a satellite real-asset sleeve for diversification, an inflation and policy-transition hedge, and a thematic allocation aligned with decarbonization pathways. Suitable investor profiles include allocators employing completion sleeves around core equity/bond mixes and institutions running risk-parity or real-asset overlays seeking non-traditional drivers. Regimes with tightening policy, rising compliance demand, or constrained allowance supply can be constructive, while policy loosening or industrial slowdowns can challenge. Key risk to monitor: derivatives structure and market capacity, where liquidity shifts and roll costs can meaningfully impact tracking to underlying allowance trends.
