The index follows the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes framework: new constituents must exceed a global equity-universe minimum size, while existing members benefit from two-thirds-size buffers that reduce turnover. Securities must satisfy the Emerging Markets Minimum Liquidity Requirement, including 3- and 12-month annualized traded value ratio thresholds around 15% and minimum 3-month trading frequency of 80%, with lower maintenance levels for incumbents. Only securities meeting free-float and foreign-ownership constraints enter the investable universe. Constituents are weighted by free float-adjusted market cap after foreign room and liquidity adjustments, with no explicit issuer or sector caps, and the index is reviewed quarterly, typically effective at month-end in February, May, August and November.

Investment Proposition

KraneShares MSCI Emerging Markets ex China Index ETF (KEMX) offers broad exposure to emerging-markets equities while intentionally excluding China, enabling allocators to manage China exposure separately and calibrate country risk more precisely. The strategy delivers diversified access across multiple regions and sectors, generally reflecting cap-weighted leadership where financials, technology-enabled consumer franchises, and commodity-linked producers can be prominent. Return drivers include domestic reform progress, demographic demand, export competitiveness, and terms-of-trade shifts, alongside sensitivity to global risk appetite, U.S. dollar trends, and local interest-rate cycles. As a portfolio tool, it can serve as a core EM building block paired with a dedicated China sleeve, a diversification layer for global equity models, or a tactical overlay to balance country concentration. Suitable investors include institutional allocators practicing country-level budgeting and advisors constructing modular EM exposures for client mandates. Supportive regimes often feature stable or easing global financial conditions and resilient commodity or manufacturing cycles; stronger dollars or broad risk aversion can be challenging. Key risk to monitor: the exclusion design can increase concentration in a subset of countries and sectors, affecting factor balance and liquidity depth.
