The underlying Janus Henderson Small Cap Growth Alpha Index targets U.S. small-cap growth stocks drawn from a Solactive small-cap universe. Companies are scored each quarter on growth, profitability, and capital-efficiency metrics using decile ranks; scores are equally weighted and the top 10% become constituents. Selected names are market-cap weighted within calibrated sector weights that align the index’s sector distribution to a predefined sector reference; if a sector would have <5 names, additional highest-scoring stocks are added until five are present. A 3% single-stock cap is applied within each sector, with any excess redistributed by market cap and, if needed, by adding the next highest-scoring names in that sector. The index reselects quarterly (calculation dates at end-Feb/May/Aug/Nov; effective ~10 business days later) and removes names intraperiod if they exit the eligible universe, redistributing weights pro rata subject to the 3% cap.

Investment Proposition

Janus Henderson Small Cap Growth Alpha ETF (JSML) delivers a rules-driven approach to U.S. small-cap growth that blends fundamental and behavioral signals to emphasize durable growth attributes with attention to quality and market leadership traits. The methodology seeks to balance upside capture with risk controls by filtering for financial resilience, earnings durability, and trend persistence, while managing position sizes and sector exposures to avoid undue concentration. Periodic rebalancing and disciplined sell rules are used to refresh the opportunity set and mitigate style drift as companies evolve. Resulting exposures may tilt toward higher-growth franchises with improving profitability, yet the process can also surface unexpected quality or momentum biases that diverge from simple size-and-growth definitions. In portfolios, JSML can operate as a satellite growth sleeve, a factor-completion tool for small-cap allocations, or a targeted engine for long-horizon equity compounding. Investors most likely to use it include growth-oriented allocators seeking systematic small-cap exposure and advisors complementing active core holdings with transparent rules-based tilts. It tends to be supported by risk-on backdrops and easing financial conditions, while tightening liquidity or sharp factor rotations can be challenging. Key risk to monitor: capacity and trading costs in thinner small-cap markets.
