The underlying Russell 1000 Consumer Staples RIC 22.5/45 Capped Index targets U.S. large- and mid-caps classified in Consumer Staples under ICB within the Russell 1000 universe. Eligibility is inherited from Russell 1000 membership, which is set annually by float-adjusted market-cap ranking of U.S.-listed companies with at least 5% free float; eligible IPOs are added quarterly. Constituents are weighted by free float market cap, then a RIC cap is applied each quarterly review: any single issuer is constrained to ≤22.5% and the aggregate weight of all issuers each ≥4.5% is limited to ≤45%; if these limits are breached intra-quarter due to corporate events, capping is reapplied. The index reflects full Russell corporate-action treatment. Sector membership follows ICB classifications; reconstitution of the parent occurs each June, while the sector index applies the quarterly capping schedule and routine share/float updates.

Investment Proposition

iShares U.S. Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) offers targeted exposure to U.S. producers and distributors of everyday goods spanning food, beverages, household and personal care, and select retail channels, aiming to deliver a defensive equity profile anchored in cash-flow durability. The strategy tracks a market-cap-weighted basket of staples companies, reflecting the sector’s concentration in large brand platforms while providing diversified industry coverage. Earnings drivers include pricing power, input-cost management, and brand equity; demand is typically steadier across cycles, though valuations can be sensitive to interest-rate moves and shifts in investor preference between defensives and cyclicals. IYK can function as a core defensive sleeve for diversification and stability, an income-oriented equity component where dividend persistence matters, or a ballast in risk-parity and multi-asset constructs during late-cycle or slowdown periods. It may suit investors prioritizing “sleep-well” capital within equities or allocators smoothing portfolio volatility. Supportive regimes include slower growth with contained input costs; headwinds arise when rates rise rapidly or when consumer trade-down and private-label competition pressure margins. A key fund-specific risk is sector concentration that can heighten sensitivity to valuation compression in staples mega-caps.
