The underlying S&P 500 offers float-adjusted market-cap exposure to U.S. large caps chosen by a committee using explicit investability, size, liquidity, and profitability criteria. Additions must clear the current large-cap market-cap guideline (unadjusted ≥ US$22.7bn) and float-adjusted market cap ≥ 50% of that level; the composite targets about the 85th percentile of the U.S. equity market, with mid/small bands below to provide buffers between size tiers. Eligibility requires U.S. domicile and listing, at least 10% public float, adequate trading capacity measured by a float-adjusted liquidity ratio and sustained share turnover, and positive as-reported earnings both in aggregate for the last four quarters and in the latest quarter. The index weights constituents by float-adjusted market cap without explicit single-name caps. Rebalancing is quarterly, effective after the close on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December; constituent changes are implemented as needed.

Investment Proposition

iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) delivers broad, market-cap-weighted access to leading U.S. large-cap companies across sectors that anchor the domestic equity market. The strategy targets long-term capital appreciation by reflecting the composition of major, liquid U.S. corporations, using a systematic, passive approach that typically maintains low turnover and steady style exposures. Returns are driven by U.S. earnings growth, margin cycles, and equity risk premia, with sensitivity to interest-rate trends that influence valuations of duration-sensitive sectors alongside cyclicals. It tends to fare relatively better during durable U.S. expansions with constructive liquidity conditions, and can be tested when profit cycles compress or risk appetite fades. In portfolios, it serves as a core U.S. equity anchor, a benchmark-aligned sleeve for strategic asset allocation, or a simple overlay for policy targets within multi-asset models. Appropriate users include institutional allocators seeking scalable U.S. exposure and advisors constructing core-satellite frameworks around a domestic equity nucleus. One fund-specific risk to monitor is potential concentration in the largest constituents and dominant sectors inherent in market-cap weighting, which can heighten exposure to narrow leadership phases.
