The underlying BBG US Universal 1-5 Year Index supplies market-value-weighted exposure to USD-denominated, taxable bonds rated investment grade or high yield with remaining maturity ≥1 and <5 years. It is a maturity-constrained subset of the Bloomberg US Universal Index, which unions US Aggregate, US Corporate High Yield, Investment-Grade 144A, Eurodollar, US Emerging Markets, and non-ERISA CMBS segments. Inclusion uses “middle” credit ratings and size/liquidity floors: Treasuries/government-related/corporates ≥USD300m; high yield ≥USD150m; Eurodollar ≥USD300m; US EM hard-currency bonds ≥USD500m per line and ≥USD1bn outstanding per corporate issuer; agency MBS pool aggregates ≥USD1bn; ABS ≥USD500m deal/≥USD25m tranche; CMBS ≥USD500m deal with ≥USD300m outstanding and ≥USD25m tranche. Eligible coupons are fixed-rate (PIKs allowed); floaters/convertibles/CoCos are excluded; fixed-to-float exit one year before reset. Treasuries are float-adjusted for SOMA holdings. The index rebalances monthly at month-end.

Investment Proposition

iShares Core 1-5 Year USD Bond ETF (ISTB) provides diversified short-maturity exposure to U.S. dollar investment-grade bonds, aiming to deliver defensive income and reduced interest-rate sensitivity relative to broader core benchmarks. The strategy tracks a rules-based universe spanning Treasuries, agencies, corporates, and securitized debt, emphasizing broad market representation and efficient turnover while maintaining tight maturity guardrails. Risk and return characteristics are driven by limited duration and moderate credit exposure: carry comes primarily from high-quality sectors, with spread risk emerging during risk-off episodes, while faster reinvestment can help when yields reset higher. This profile suits roles such as a cash-plus core bond sleeve, a liquidity-friendly ballast alongside equities, or a time-segmented reserve for near-term liabilities. Suitable investors include outcome-oriented allocators prioritizing stability with modest income, and model-portfolio builders using building-block duration ladders. It tends to hold up better when rates rise from low levels or when equity volatility lifts, and can lag during broad credit selloffs or strong bond rallies led by longer maturities. A key risk to monitor is credit-mix drift that may alter the balance between quality and spread exposure over time.
