The underlying S&P Global Core Battery Metals Index targets global miners of cobalt, lithium, and nickel selected from the S&P Global Broad Market Index, which spans developed and emerging market large-, mid-, and small-cap stocks. Constituents must be classified as engaged in battery-metal mining and satisfy the float-adjusted market cap and trading-liquidity requirements of the parent index, which screen out illiquid and very small companies. S&P assigns each eligible company a thematic exposure using the share of revenue attributable to cobalt, lithium, and nickel and combines this with liquidity measures to determine index weights, so firms with higher battery-metal focus and stronger trading capacity receive larger allocations. The index composition and target weights are fully refreshed each July using updated revenue and liquidity data, with interim quarterly reviews in January, April, and October that adjust only constituent weights while keeping membership unchanged.

Investment Proposition

ProShares S&P Global Core Battery Metals ETF (ION) provides targeted equity exposure to companies involved in mining, refining, and processing the metals used in rechargeable batteries and electrification supply chains. The strategy emphasizes the upstream segment of the value chain, seeking to capture operating leverage to long-term demand for lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite, while maintaining broad geographic diversification across major producing regions. It pursues capital appreciation through a rules-based portfolio of producers and processors, accepting higher earnings cyclicality as the trade-off for greater sensitivity to commodity price trends. Resulting characteristics can include pronounced factor tilts toward quality of reserves and operational scale, with style exposure that can oscillate between value and growth as input prices and capex cycles evolve. Portfolio roles include a thematic satellite for energy transition mandates, a commodity-adjacent sleeve for diversification beyond traditional resources, and a tactical overlay for investors expressing views on battery metal supply–demand balances. Suitable profiles include thematic allocators building secular-trend baskets and multi-asset investors seeking targeted equity beta to the electrification supply chain. Key risk: concentration in upstream commodity producers can amplify drawdowns if metal prices weaken or project timelines slip.
