Constituents are USD-denominated, fixed-rate nominal notes/bonds; T-bills, TIPS, STRIPS and floating-rate issues are excluded. Eligibility typically requires minimum par outstanding of at least USD 300mn per issue. The index is market-value weighted by amount outstanding, with no issuer or sector caps (single issuer: U.S. Treasury). Reconstitution and rebalancing occur monthly at month-end; new issues that meet maturity/size rules are added at the next rebalance, while matured bonds’ redemption proceeds remain as cash in the index until month-end. Corporate actions (when applicable) and add-on taps adjust amounts outstanding subject to a three-business-day month-end lockout. Pricing uses evaluated bids; returns are total-return with coupon reinvestment.

Investment Proposition

iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF) provides targeted exposure to intermediate-maturity U.S. Treasury securities for investors seeking high-quality duration without venturing into the longest end of the curve. The strategy emphasizes interest-rate sensitivity over credit risk, using a transparent, rules-based approach to hold a diversified basket of government obligations with similar term characteristics, which supports reliable liquidity and straightforward rate positioning. Income is sourced from Treasury coupons, while total return is primarily driven by moves in the risk-free curve and term premium. The fund can act as a core duration sleeve, a diversification and stability anchor alongside equities and credit, and a drawdown hedge when growth expectations fade or risk appetite contracts. It tends to be favored during economic slowdowns, disinflationary phases, or flights to quality, and can be challenged by rapid rate repricings or unexpectedly persistent inflation. Suitable users include liability-aware allocators seeking predictable interest-rate exposure and multi-asset managers implementing tactical duration tilts. A key risk to monitor is heightened price volatility from concentrated exposure to a single maturity segment during abrupt yield-curve shifts.
