The underlying Bloomberg 2032 Term High Yield and Income Index targets a buy-and-hold basket of USD-denominated corporate bonds maturing between 1 January 2032 and 15 December 2032. Eligible bonds are fixed-rate USD corporate issues with minimum par outstanding of USD 250 million for high yield and USD 300 million for investment grade. The universe includes bullet, callable, sinkable/amortizing, zero-coupon, PIK and toggle structures, but excludes defaulted issues, emerging-market high-yield corporates, convertibles, CoCos, floaters, Eurodollar issues, private placements, very small-par bonds and illiquid securities lacking reliable pricing. Bonds priced below 60 are removed and locked out, permanently so in the final 1.5 years. Constituents are market-value-weighted with a 3% issuer cap, relaxable in 0.5% steps if needed. The index rebalances monthly, converts to a high-yield/BBB composite 1.5 years before maturity, and stops normal rebalancing after the final June month-end while principal redemptions accumulate in a non-yielding cash component until termination.

Investment Proposition

iShares iBonds 2032 Term High Yield and Income ETF (IBHL) presents a term-dated approach to U.S. high yield corporates, combining a diversified basket of below-investment-grade bonds maturing in the stated year with a planned final cash distribution at wind-down. The strategy targets income while the portfolio’s effective duration declines as holdings roll toward maturity, leaving return dynamics increasingly tied to credit conditions and recovery prospects rather than rate levels late in life. It is positioned to benefit from supportive refinancing windows and resilient earnings, and it may face headwinds when spreads reprice abruptly or downgrades cluster. Portfolio roles include building a laddered sequence for future liabilities, complementing core fixed income with defined-horizon carry, or staging capital for time-segmented spending needs. Suitable investors include income-seeking allocators who prefer a rules-based basket over single-bond selection and advisors planning cash flows around a 2032 objective. One fund-specific risk is liquidity and trading spreads potentially widening as assets contract near termination, warranting attention to execution as the end date nears.
