The underlying Bloomberg 2030 Term High Yield and Income Index provides a targeted-maturity benchmark for USD-denominated, fixed-rate, taxable high yield and BBB-rated corporate bonds maturing between 1 January 2030 and 15 December 2030. Eligible securities are USD corporate issues with minimum par outstanding of USD 250 million for high yield and USD 300 million for investment grade, excluding defaulted bonds and most equity-like, floating-rate, inflation-linked, private or retail securities and issues lacking reliable pricing. The index is high yield until roughly 1.5 years before maturity, then becomes a composite of high yield and BBB bonds, with BBB weight increasing as the high yield subindex’s market value declines or falls below a USD 30 billion trigger. Constituents are market-value weighted subject to 3% issuer caps applied iteratively, and the index rebalances monthly, with principal cash flows in the final months accumulating in a non-yielding cash component until the December 2030 termination.

Investment Proposition

iShares iBonds 2030 Term High Yield and Income ETF (IBHJ) provides a targeted year-of-maturity approach to below-investment-grade corporate credit, pairing income generation with a planned wind-down in the stated year. The portfolio emphasizes diversification across issuers and sectors while maintaining a narrowing maturity window, so interest-rate exposure diminishes as the fund seasons, though spread risk remains the primary driver of outcomes. The strategy’s roll-down and cash accumulation profile ahead of termination can help align assets to future liabilities without the single-name selection and reinvestment work of individual bonds. It tends to fare better when credit conditions are benign and refinancing access is orderly, and it can be pressured in risk-off periods with widening spreads or elevated defaults. Use cases include ladder building around specific cash-flow dates, a glidepath from higher-beta credit toward cash, or a complement to core bond holdings. Appropriate for advisors and income-oriented investors planning around a 2030 horizon. A fund-specific risk is elevated turnover to maintain maturity criteria, which may modestly increase costs through the cycle.
