The underlying Bloomberg 2029 Term High Yield and Income Index delivers USD-denominated, fixed-rate US corporate bonds maturing between 01-Jan-2029 and 15-Dec-2029. High yield and BBB-rated issues qualify, with minimum amounts outstanding of 250m USD (high yield) and 300m USD (investment grade); EM-issuer high yield is excluded. Security types include bullets, callables, putables, sinkers, original-issue zeros, EETCs, PIK/toggle notes; floaters, fixed-to-float, convertibles, and CoCos are excluded. Bonds priced below 60 USD are removed and subject to a lockout; in the final 1.5 years the index adds a BBB sleeve whose monthly weight increases only if the HY subindex’s market value declines from a June 30 reference, and in the final six months principal is held as non-yielding cash. Issuer weights are capped at 3% via iterative redistribution. The index rebalances monthly.

Investment Proposition

iShares iBonds 2029 Term High Yield and Income ETF (IBHI) offers defined-maturity exposure to U.S. high yield corporate bonds that are scheduled to mature in the fund’s target year, aiming to combine ongoing income with a known portfolio end date. The strategy holds a diversified basket of below-investment-grade bonds and allows the portfolio’s duration to decline naturally as securities roll down the curve, while proceeds from maturities and redemptions are retained in cashlike instruments ahead of a final distribution at termination. This construction can mitigate interest-rate sensitivity over time but remains driven by credit spreads and default cycles, with performance typically benefitting from stable or improving corporate fundamentals and challenged by late-cycle stress. Use cases include building a bond ladder for liability dates, a time-segmented income sleeve for near-term spending, or a satellite credit allocation with defined horizon risk. Suitable investors include income-focused allocators seeking clarity on principal timing and advisors replacing individual bonds with a rules-based basket. A key risk to monitor is credit-driven drawdowns and potential trading frictions as assets shrink near wind-down.
