The underlying Bloomberg 2028 Term High Yield and Income Index (USD) targets USD-denominated, fixed-rate corporate bonds maturing between 1 Jan 2028 and 15 Dec 2028. Eligibility requires minimum par outstanding of USD250m (high yield) or USD300m (BBB), fixed coupons (including step-ups), and excludes defaults, convertibles, fixed-to-float, Eurodollar issues, and, for high yield, emerging-market corporates. A clean-price floor of USD60 removes bonds, with permanent exclusion during the final 1.5 years. The index consists solely of high yield until 1.5 years before maturity, then becomes a composite of high yield and BBB sub-indices; the BBB weight increases only when the high-yield market value declines from a defined reference. Issuers are capped at 3% of index market value (cap raised in 0.50% steps only if necessary). It rebalances monthly; after 30 June 2028 weights float and principal received is held in a non-yielding cash component until maturity.

Investment Proposition

iShares iBonds 2028 Term High Yield and Income ETF (IBHH) targets diversified exposure to sub-investment-grade bonds maturing around its end date, seeking income today with a defined return of capital at term. The strategy centers on carry and credit selection within a single-year maturity cohort, leaving the portfolio more sensitive to credit spreads than to long-rate moves, with rate exposure naturally declining as the fund approaches termination. Turnover typically reflects index-like eligibility changes and corporate actions rather than active timing, keeping the philosophy transparent and rules-driven. This structure can be used as a ladder rung to stage cash flows further out the curve or as a satellite for investors pursuing a carry-oriented tilt with a clear exit point. Supportive regimes include steady growth and constructive refinancing windows; phases marked by tightening financial conditions or rising defaults can weigh on interim valuations and income continuity. Appropriate users include advisors building multi-year ladders and institutions aligning future spending needs. A key risk is reinvestment and extension uncertainty tied to calls and tenders, which can shift realized cash-flow timing versus expectations.
