The underlying Bloomberg 2026 Term High Yield and Income Index targets USD, fixed-rate, taxable corporate bonds maturing 1 Jan–15 Dec 2026. Until 1.5 years before maturity it holds only high yield; thereafter it becomes a composite of high yield and BBB-rated bonds, with the BBB sleeve sized mechanically by the HY market-value decline since a reference date. Eligibility: HY issues ≥ USD 250mn outstanding; BBB issues ≥ USD 300mn; clean price must be ≥ USD 60 (violations are removed with a 3-month lockout; during the final 1.5 years, removals are permanent). Exclusions include EM-issuer HY, defaulted, CoCos/contingent write-downs, floaters/fixed-to-float, convertibles/preferreds/DRD-eligible, Eurodollar, retail par, and illiquid issues. Constituents are market-value weighted with a 3% issuer cap (iteratively redistributed); rebalanced monthly. After 30 June 2026, weights float and principal from July–15 Dec is held as non-yielding cash until index maturity.

Investment Proposition

iShares iBonds 2026 Term High Yield and Income ETF (IBHF) delivers a defined-maturity approach to below-investment-grade corporate credit, aiming to combine income with a predictable end date and return of proceeds. The portfolio holds a diversified basket of bonds slated to mature around the target year, emphasizing carry and spread compression while accepting the credit beta typical of the asset class. As the fund seasons, roll-down can gradually temper rate sensitivity, though spread duration remains the dominant driver versus Treasuries. The construct supports laddering, helping allocators stage cash flows across years and align to time-segmented mandates. It can serve as a satellite income sleeve, a building block for bond-ladder frameworks, or a tactical overlay to harvest carry when credit is stable. Favorable regimes include benign default environments and steady growth; downturns with rising distress can pressure prices until maturity mechanics prevail. Suitable investors include multi-asset managers seeking targeted rungs in high yield ladders and advisors matching intermediate liabilities. A key risk is call and redemption activity, which can alter cash-flow timing and reinvestment dynamics relative to expectations.
