The underlying Bloomberg 2025 Term High Yield and Income Index targets USD-denominated corporate bonds maturing between January 1 and December 15, 2025. Eligibility spans high yield and BBB-rated issues; minimum par outstanding is USD250mn for high yield and USD300mn for investment grade. Fixed-rate, original-issue zeros, PIK/toggle notes and underwritten MTNs are eligible; convertibles, CoCos, floaters, private placements and defaulted bonds are excluded. A USD60 clean-price floor removes bonds, with a three-month lockout. The index is market-value weighted with a 3% issuer cap per subindex, redistributed pro rata. It rebalances monthly; 1.5 years before maturity it becomes a composite of high yield and BBB sleeves, with the BBB weight set mechanically to offset changes in the high-yield sleeve, and may switch early if the high-yield market value falls below USD30bn. The last rebalance is June 30 of the maturity year.

Investment Proposition

iShares iBonds 2025 Term High Yield and Income ETF (IBHE) provides targeted exposure to U.S. high yield bonds that are expected to mature in the fund’s designated year, offering a diversified, bond-like cash-flow profile with a planned liquidation at term. The strategy seeks income while managing interest-rate exposure through a natural roll-down, concentrating credit risk in a single maturity cohort and generally reducing duration as the end date approaches. Portfolio changes are rules-based and typically limited to maintaining eligibility and addressing corporate actions, which can help keep turnover contained late in the lifecycle. Returns are primarily driven by carry, credit spreads, recoveries, and idiosyncratic issuer outcomes. In balanced or improving credit conditions, the fund can function as a short-horizon income sleeve or transition exposure ahead of known liabilities; in risk-off episodes, mark-to-market volatility and spread widening can challenge results until maturity proceeds are distributed. Suitable profiles include liability-aware allocators building bond ladders and income-seeking investors segmenting near-term buckets. A key risk to monitor is concentrated cohort credit risk, where downgrades or defaults among multiple issuers in the same vintage may meaningfully affect outcomes.
