The underlying FTSE High Yield (Treasury Rate-Hedged) Index targets USD-denominated high-yield credit while neutralizing interest-rate exposure. The long leg holds U.S. and Canadian corporate high-yield bonds that are fixed-rate, cash-pay, non-convertible, issued within the last five years (fallen angels within four), with remaining maturity ≥1 year, issue size ≥ USD 1bn, and ratings between BB (max) and C (min, non-default). No more than two issues per parent; market-value weights are capped at 2% per issuer. The short leg is a duration-matched hedge using CTD-mapped U.S. Treasury futures across 2-, 5-, and 10-year tenors sized so the portfolio’s DV01 is approximately zero. The index fixes constituents and hedge sizing monthly and rebalances on the last business day of each month.

Investment Proposition

ProShares High Yield-Interest Rate Hedged ETF (HYHG) provides exposure to U.S. below-investment-grade corporate credit while targeting substantially reduced interest-rate sensitivity through a systematic short position in U.S. Treasuries. The strategy’s objective is to isolate high yield spread risk by pairing a diversified long bond portfolio with a duration hedge that seeks to offset most rate movements, allowing credit fundamentals and risk appetite to drive results. Portfolio construction emphasizes broad issuer and sector representation, while the hedge is maintained and adjusted through liquid futures, which helps contain turnover and maintain transparency. Use cases include an income-oriented sleeve with explicit rate-risk control, a tactical credit allocation when investors prefer spread exposure over duration, and factor completion in balanced portfolios seeking to modulate interest-rate beta. The fund can be favored in environments with steady or rising yields and tightening credit spreads, and can be challenged during risk-off periods when spreads widen or when rates fall meaningfully and the short-rate hedge detracts. A fund-specific risk to monitor is hedge basis risk—imperfect alignment between portfolio duration and the Treasury short may leave residual rate exposure.
