The underlying S&P Kensho Smart Transportation Index provides exposure to U.S.-listed equities, including ADRs, whose products and services drive smart transportation across electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, advanced transport systems and drones. The index universe is all constituents of four theme subindices; at each review only stocks with float-adjusted market cap of at least 100 million USD and three-month average daily traded value of at least 1 million USD are eligible. Constituents are classified as Core or Non-Core using text analysis of regulatory filings and revenue segments, with Core names deriving more of their business from the targeted technologies. Within each subindex, Core and Non-Core stocks are equally weighted inside their bucket; the Smart Transportation index then rescales these weights using risk-adjusted performance to set each subindex’s contribution and systematically tilts toward Core stocks at the aggregate level. The index is reconstituted and rebalanced each June and additionally rebalanced each December.

Investment Proposition

State Street SPDR S&P Kensho Smart Mobility ETF (HAIL) provides exposure to the evolving transportation ecosystem, including vehicle electrification, autonomy, advanced safety, connectivity, and supporting semiconductors, software, and component supply chains. The approach emphasizes companies deriving meaningful revenue from next-generation mobility, creating a cross-industry basket that can benefit from platform shifts in powertrains, sensing, and data-driven services. Return potential is tied to innovation cycles, scale economies, and cost curves in batteries and compute, while outcomes remain sensitive to regulation, consumer adoption, and capital intensity. Factor characteristics often lean toward growth and quality within technology and industrials, with cyclicality linked to global manufacturing and auto demand; risk can rise during tightening liquidity or when sentiment turns against pre-profit innovators. In portfolios, HAIL fits as a thematic satellite, a tactical vehicle for mobility adoption inflections, or a factor-completion sleeve augmenting technology exposure with real-economy end markets. Profiles most aligned include research-driven allocators building defined innovation sleeves and macro-aware managers seeking targeted exposure to transportation digitization. A fund-specific risk is regulatory and technology execution concentration, where setbacks in standards, incentives, or key platforms can create correlated drawdowns across the theme.
