The underlying FTSE Goldman Sachs Treasury Inflation Protected USD Bond Index offers market-value exposure to off-the-run US TIPS while matching the liquid market’s real-yield duration. Eligibility is USD-denominated, fixed-rate TIPS with remaining maturity ≥1 year, investment-grade (≥BBB-/Baa3), and minimum issue size USD 5 billion (before SOMA adjustment). Outstanding amounts are float-adjusted to exclude SOMA holdings, then on-the-run securities and issues not off-the-run for at least two full months are excluded to improve capacity. Remaining bonds are market-value weighted, with profile weights adjusted so the index’s weighted-average real-yield duration equals that of the liquid TIPS universe, constraining term-structure drift. The index is fixed monthly on a published profile-fixing date and rebalanced at month-end; cash flows are not reinvested intra-month in total-return calculations.

Investment Proposition

Goldman Sachs Access Inflation Protected USD Bond ETF (GTIP) presents exposure to U.S. Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS) using a systematic approach that emphasizes investability across the curve, including seasoned “off-the-run” issues to broaden the opportunity set and enhance tradability. The portfolio seeks to reflect the real-rate term structure while providing inflation linkage through principal adjustments, making returns primarily a function of changes in real yields and inflation expectations rather than credit risk. GTIP tends to be supported when inflation risk premia rise or when nominal yields move due to higher expected inflation, and can be challenged when real rates increase without a commensurate pickup in break-evens. As part of a broader asset mix, it can serve as an inflation-hedge sleeve within core fixed income, a risk-parity or liability-aware component for managing real purchasing power, or a defensive anchor against unexpected price shocks. Suitable investors include allocators targeting explicit inflation sensitivity and those balancing duration across nominal and real exposures. A fund-specific consideration is real-rate volatility, which can introduce meaningful price swings even when realized inflation is stable.
