The underlying Goldman Sachs ActiveBeta Japan Equity Index targets large- and mid-cap Japanese equities while tilting toward value, momentum, quality and low-volatility factors. The universe is the MSCI Japan Index, which covers about 85% of Japan’s free float-adjusted equity market and includes only securities meeting MSCI’s global size, free-float and 12-month liquidity standards. From this universe, four factor subindices are constructed by reweighting constituents toward higher factor scores for value, momentum, quality and low volatility, while underweighting or excluding low-score names. Each subindex remains long-only and keeps sector, country and overall risk characteristics broadly aligned with MSCI Japan through constraints on active stock, sector and country weights. The final index weight for each stock is the average of its weights across the four factor subindices. The index is reviewed and rebalanced quarterly on a fixed schedule.

Investment Proposition

Goldman Sachs ActiveBeta Japan Equity ETF (GSJY) provides diversified access to Japanese equities through a systematic, factor-aware lens designed to improve the balance between return potential and risk. The strategy blends well-researched equity style signals—such as value, momentum, quality, and lower-volatility characteristics—while maintaining broad industry representation across the local market. The rules-based approach seeks to harvest persistent sources of equity premia, control unintended bets, and moderate concentration, with periodic rebalancing that adapts to changing fundamentals and price leadership. Investors should expect core developed-market equity risk tempered by quality and defensive tilts; income is incidental to stock selection rather than a primary objective. The fund tends to fare better when earnings dispersion rewards stock selection and when defensiveness is valued, and can lag in sharp pro-cyclical surges led by highly levered or speculative shares. Portfolio roles include regional core equity with factor balance, a satellite tilt for Japan exposure within global allocations, and a currency-aware sleeve for investors managing USD/JPY dynamics. Suitable users include global allocators seeking diversified Japan exposure and factor-oriented investors refining regional sleeves. Key risk: factor crowding or sector skews may emerge between rebalances; monitor exposures and turnover.
