The underlying FTSE Goldman Sachs US Investment-Grade Corporate Bond 1-5 Years Index provides exposure to US dollar investment-grade corporate bonds with 1–5 years remaining maturity, overlaid with fundamental tilts and liquidity screens. Eligible bonds are fixed-rate, taxable issues from US and non-US industrial, utility and financial issuers, registered or Rule 144A with registration rights, rated at least BBB-/Baa3, and with ≥USD 250 million outstanding and at least two qualifying bonds per issuer. The index is market-value weighted but first applies an issuer-level ranking by one-year change in EBIT margin and debt-to-enterprise-value within broad sectors; issuers in the lowest 10% composite rank have their market capitalizations halved, while others and issuers lacking data are left unchanged. Weights are then adjusted in two maturity buckets so index duration matches the Bloomberg US Corporate 1–5 year parent, with issuer caps of 5% (3% where fundamentals are unavailable). The index rebalances monthly, with the fundamental reweighting updated quarterly.

Investment Proposition

Goldman Sachs Access Investment Grade Corporate 1-5 Year Bond ETF (GSIG) provides targeted exposure to U.S. investment-grade corporate bonds concentrated in the short to intermediate segment, seeking a balance between income and rate risk management. The strategy emphasizes broad issuer diversification across sectors while focusing on maturities that typically limit interest-rate sensitivity compared with longer corporate benchmarks, with spread risk remaining the primary return driver. Portfolio characteristics generally tilt toward high-quality credit with measured exposure to cyclicals; return outcomes are shaped more by credit fundamentals and refinancing conditions than by long-end yield moves. In portfolios, GSIG can serve as a short-duration credit sleeve for income and stability, a complement to government-heavy cores, or a tactical bridge when de-risking from long corporate duration. Conservative income seekers and liability-aware allocators often use this profile within barbell structures alongside equities or longer Treasuries. It tends to benefit from benign credit conditions and range-bound rates, and can lag when spreads reprice rapidly or curves steepen from the front end. A key risk to monitor is downgrade and concentration risk in frequent issuers, which can increase turnover and trading costs.
