The underlying S&P Green Bond U.S. Dollar Select Index targets USD-denominated, labeled green bonds across supranational, sovereign, agency, corporate and securitized issuers that finance eligible environmental projects. Constituents must be identified as “green” by an external taxonomy (e.g., CBI) and meet investability thresholds, with non-USD issues excluded. The index is market-value weighted with issuer concentration capped at 10%; the high-yield sleeve, when present, is further capped at 20% to limit credit risk concentration. Callable, putable and amortizing structures may be included if otherwise eligible; tax-exempt municipals are excluded. New issues enter at reconstitution once use-of-proceeds disclosure is available. The index rebalances monthly, applying the issuer cap each period; between rebalances it is float-adjusted by market value, allowing organic weight drift while maintaining the USD green-bond focus.

Investment Proposition

VanEck Green Bond ETF (GRNB) delivers diversified exposure to U.S. dollar-denominated green bonds whose proceeds are intended to finance environmentally focused projects across government, agency, supranational, and corporate issuers. The rules-based approach emphasizes labeled bonds that meet defined sustainability criteria, providing a straightforward way to integrate use-of-proceeds debt into a core fixed income allocation. Return characteristics generally align with investment-grade credit and interest-rate risk, with performance driven by duration, sector mix, and issuer fundamentals rather than project outcomes. Income is primarily coupon-based, and the portfolio’s quality profile and maturity structure can create sensitivity to policy-rate cycles and credit-spread regimes. GRNB can function as an income sleeve with sustainability alignment, a values-oriented core bond tilt, or a thematic mandate within impact frameworks. Investors likely to use it include institutions implementing policy-driven ESG guidelines and core-plus bond strategies seeking systematic sustainable exposure without security-level research. A key fund-specific risk is reliance on third-party labeling and methodologies; evolving standards or inconsistent disclosures may affect eligibility, comparability, and turnover as the investable universe changes.
