The underlying Solactive Gold-Backed Bond Index provides synthetic exposure to US-dollar investment-grade corporate bonds with a fully overlaid gold hedge, effectively converting bond returns into a gold-denominated stream. It combines two static components at 100% notional weight each: the Solactive USD Investment Grade Corporate Index and the Solactive Gold Front Month MD Rolling Futures Index ER. The bond index is a market-value-weighted universe of USD corporate issues with amount outstanding ≥400 million USD, remaining maturity ≥18 months, and investment-grade ratings of at least BBB-/Baa3, including global, US domestic, 144A, Yankee, and MTN issues. Bonds are selected on each monthly selection day and rebalanced on the last business day of the month. The gold index tracks front-month COMEX gold futures via a monthly four-day 75/25–50/50–25/75 roll into the next contract, calculated on an excess-return basis. The combined index is rebalanced monthly to maintain equal notional exposure to the bond and gold components, with index-level borrowing mechanics aligning with this 1x/1x overlay.

Investment Proposition

Strategy Shares Gold Enhanced Yield ETF (GOLY) presents a hybrid approach that pairs exposure to near-month gold futures obtained via swap agreements with a portfolio of U.S. dollar fixed-income holdings to seek total return with enhanced income characteristics. The philosophy is to capture gold’s potential diversification and inflation-sensitivity while using bonds to provide carry and dampen volatility, accepting that factor tilts may vary as term structure, credit spreads, and gold futures curves shift. The design can exhibit commodity-driven upside asymmetry during inflationary or risk-aversion phases, while retaining interest-rate and credit exposures typical of a high-quality bond sleeve. Use cases include an income-oriented real-asset sleeve, a satellite allocation for inflation hedging within a balanced portfolio, or a tactical allocation to complement traditional commodities exposure with bond carry. Suitable profiles include multi-asset allocators seeking a single-ticket gold-plus-bonds solution and advisors pursuing a diversified income strategy with inflation awareness. It may be favored when real rates are volatile or inflation expectations rise, and can be challenged if gold weakens alongside widening credit spreads. A key risk to monitor is the efficacy and costs of swap-based gold exposure, which can impact tracking and realized carry.
