The underlying S&P Global Natural Resources Index targets 90 large, liquid companies globally whose primary businesses are in natural resources and commodity value chains. It is built by combining three sub-indices—Agriculture, Energy, and Metals & Mining—each contributing one-third of the total index weight, thereby fixing sector balance at 1/3-1/3-1/3. Within each sub-index, eligible constituents are drawn from the S&P Global BMI using standard investability and liquidity screens (free-float adjustment, minimum size and trading turnover), and the largest names by float-adjusted market cap are selected to meet the target count. Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market cap within their sub-index, then scaled to the equal sub-index weights. The index is reviewed and rebalanced annually in August; ongoing corporate actions follow S&P DJI maintenance policies.

Investment Proposition

State Street SPDR S&P Global Natural Resources ETF (GNR) delivers broad equity exposure to companies tied to energy, metals and mining, and agriculture, seeking diversified access to commodity-linked cash flows in a single sleeve. The portfolio blends upstream producers, midstream operators, and downstream processors across regions, aiming to balance cyclicality and supply-demand dynamics while limiting reliance on any single resource. Return drivers include commodity price trends, capital discipline, and operational efficiency, with style characteristics often skewing toward value and profitability. The strategy can show sensitivity to inflation, real-asset reflation, and late-cycle conditions that favor producers with competitive cost curves. In portfolios, GNR can serve as a real-assets diversifier, an inflation-aware satellite around a core equity allocation, or a tactical overlay when commodity fundamentals tighten. Likely users include allocators pursuing a diversified resources sleeve and institutions seeking an equity route to commodity exposures without direct futures. Supportive regimes include accelerating nominal growth, supply constraints, or geopolitical risk premia; headwinds can arise during growth-to-defensive rotations or disinflation. A fund-specific risk to monitor is concentration drift toward a resource category during commodity cycles, which can influence factor balance, turnover, and realized volatility relative to expectations.
