The underlying FTSE Goldman Sachs Emerging Markets USD Bond Index provides exposure to USD denominated sovereign, sovereign-guaranteed and government-sponsored bonds from emerging markets while applying governance and duration tilts. The universe starts from the FTSE Emerging Markets Broad Bond Index, restricted to fixed or fixed-to-floating bonds with at least one year to maturity, minimum issue sizes of USD 500 million for foreign sovereigns and USD 250 million for other government-related sectors, and at least two bonds per issuer. Eligible investment grade and high yield issues must be accessible to foreign investors. Each month eligible bonds are market-value weighted, then country weights are adjusted using Worldwide Governance Indicators so that countries in the lowest 10% by governance have their market values halved. Duration buckets are scaled to match the base index, country weights are capped at 5%, and the process is repeated monthly with governance scores refreshed quarterly.

Investment Proposition

Goldman Sachs Access Emerging Markets USD Bond ETF (GEMD) provides diversified access to U.S.-dollar-denominated emerging-markets debt across sovereign, quasi-sovereign and corporate issuers, using a transparent, rules-based process that emphasizes issuers with healthier fundamental profiles while systematically avoiding those with signs of deterioration. The approach seeks broad country and sector representation while controlling for credit quality and liquidity, aiming to balance income potential with risk discipline and tradability. By focusing on USD bonds, the fund removes direct local-currency volatility, leaving returns driven primarily by credit spreads and U.S. rate duration—factors that typically benefit from global growth stabilization, improving external balances and benign default trends, and are challenged during risk-off episodes or sharp U.S. real-yield rises. Within portfolios, GEMD can serve as an income-oriented satellite in fixed income, a diversification sleeve versus developed-market credit, or a tactical overlay when valuations compensate for emerging-market risk. Suitable investors include income-seekers using a disciplined EM allocation and multi-asset allocators pursuing carry with prudent guardrails. A fund-specific risk to monitor is evolving country concentration from issuance patterns, which can increase exposure to idiosyncratic policy or geopolitical shocks.
