The underlying Nasdaq AlphaDEX Small Cap Core Index delivers a rules-based selection from the Nasdaq US 700 Small Cap universe, after liquidity screens that remove issues with insufficient ADVT or trading history. Stocks are scored separately on growth (3-, 6-, 12-month price appreciation, sales-to-price, and one-year sales growth) and value (book-to-price, cash-flow-to-price, and ROA). Securities lacking full data for a style are excluded from that style. The top 525 names by the combined AlphaDEX score advance, then portfolio weights are assigned by quintile—approximately 5%/15%/30%/30%/20% across best- to worst-ranked groups—and modified equal-weighted within each quintile; sector exposure is constrained to ±10% of the selection universe’s sector weight to enhance capacity. The index is reconstituted and rebalanced quarterly on the sixth trading day of January, April, July, and October, with buffer rules minimizing unnecessary turnover.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Small Cap Core AlphaDEX Fund (FYX) provides a rules-based approach to U.S. small-cap equities that blends growth and value attributes through multi-factor selection and weighting. The methodology emphasizes fundamentals such as earnings quality, price momentum, and value characteristics, leading to a diversified roster that can migrate across styles as factor signals evolve. This dynamism may raise turnover compared with traditional market-cap portfolios, but it also seeks to avoid persistent factor traps and concentration in weaker names. Return drivers tend to be broad small-cap beta plus factor spread capture, with performance often tied to periods of improving market breadth and healthier risk appetite across smaller companies; environments dominated by narrow mega-cap leadership or liquidity stress can be more challenging. As a portfolio tool, FYX can function as a core small-cap allocation, a factor-completion sleeve to balance cap-weighted exposures, or a satellite tilt for allocators pursuing disciplined multi-factor small-cap exposure. Likely users include diversified model-portfolio builders and institutional allocators running core-satellite designs. A fund-specific risk to monitor is elevated turnover, which can increase trading costs and contribute to style drift.
