The underlying FTSE China 50 Index targets the 50 largest Chinese companies by full market cap listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and eligible within FTSE All-World, limited to H shares, Red Chips, and P Chips. Constituents are free-float and foreign-ownership adjusted; securities with free float ≤5% are excluded unless their investable market cap is exceptionally large relative to FTSE GEIS thresholds. Liquidity screens require regular trading over the prior year. A buffer keeps turnover low: insertions occur if a name rises to rank 40 or better; deletions if a constituent falls to rank 61 or below. The index is free-float market-cap weighted and applies caps at each quarterly review: any single company ≤9% and the aggregate of all >4.5% weight positions ≤38%. Reviews occur each March, June, September, and December.

Investment Proposition

iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI) provides targeted access to the most liquid, large-cap Chinese companies listed offshore, offering a straightforward way to express a view on China’s headline equity beta and policy-sensitive sectors. The strategy concentrates in dominant incumbents and state-influenced enterprises, accepting higher single-country and sector concentration to capture scale, network effects, and policy tailwinds that can shape profitability and capital allocation. Return drivers lean on domestic demand cycles, credit conditions, and reform agendas; style exposures often tilt toward value/quality within financials and mature platforms, with cyclicality to commodities, industrial activity, and the property chain. In portfolios, FXI can serve as a satellite regional sleeve for EM diversification, a tactical overlay for China catalysts, or a factor completion tool when U.S.-centric portfolios underweight non-U.S. mega-caps. Investors most likely to use it include global macro allocators seeking policy-driven dispersion and diversified equity managers implementing explicit country tilts. It tends to fare better when credit impulses improve and policy becomes supportive, while geopolitical or deleveraging phases can challenge it. Key risk to monitor: sector/ownership concentration that can amplify regulatory shocks.
