The underlying Dorsey Wright Dynamic Focus Five Index delivers a momentum-driven allocation to five First Trust sector/industry ETFs, with dynamic risk-off capacity via First Trust Enhanced Short Maturity ETF (FTSM). Using a Point & Figure relative-strength matrix, eligible First Trust sector/industry ETFs are ranked; the top five (covering ≥3 broad sectors) are selected and equally weighted. The methodology evaluates twice monthly (second and fourth weeks; once in December) and rebalances at each evaluation. If the short-term fixed income proxy (FTSM) ranks within the top 67% of the matrix, the index allocates to FTSM; its target weight equals 100% minus FTSM’s percentile rank, subject to a ±33 percentage-point step limit per evaluation, with the remainder split equally across the selected equity ETFs. Deletions outside evaluations are not replaced.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Dorsey Wright Dynamic Focus 5 ETF (FVC) provides a concentrated, rules-based rotation among a small lineup of sector and industry ETFs using relative strength, paired with a defensive overlay that can materially dial back equity risk when market leadership weakens. The approach aims to participate in persistent uptrends while mitigating drawdowns during stress, accepting higher turnover as the cost of adapting to changing leadership. The portfolio is intentionally focused, so outcomes can diverge meaningfully from broad equities; exposures often tilt toward momentum-rich segments and can occasionally lean defensive if risk conditions deteriorate. FVC can be timely when trends are established across a few sectors, and may be challenged by choppy, range-bound markets or abrupt factor reversals. It suits a satellite sleeve for tactical allocation, a momentum tilt within a diversified equity program, or a drawdown-sensitive overlay to complement a strategic core. Typical users include advisors implementing systematic tilts and self-directed investors pursuing rules-based momentum. Key risk to monitor: portfolio concentration and model-driven shifts that may amplify whipsaw during rapid leadership changes.
