The underlying Nasdaq US Smart Oil & Gas Index offers factor-tilted exposure to U.S. oil & gas companies. Stage 1 screens the sector from the Nasdaq US Benchmark using ≥USD 2.5bn company market cap and ≥USD 5m 3-month ADTV; if fewer than 30 qualify, a fallback adds the largest/liquid names until 30. Stage 2 computes Final Factor Scores from four pillars: Profit (gross income), ROA, Momentum (average 3/6/9/12-month USD returns), and Value (cash flow, given 1% weight as a tiebreaker). Stage 3 selects constituents with scores ≤30 or within the top 75% with scores ≤50, yielding 30–50 stocks. Initial weights are proportional to cash flow; caps apply in three steps: no name >8% (max five can remain at that level), all others ≤4%, and no weight <0.5%. The index reconstitutes and rebalances semi-annually, effective after the third Friday in March and September.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Nasdaq Oil & Gas ETF (FTXN) delivers concentrated sector exposure to U.S. oil and gas companies through a rules-based selection that emphasizes fundamental and volatility characteristics within the energy complex. The portfolio typically spans upstream, midstream, refining, and services, producing a multifactor tilt that may favor profitable operators while still reflecting commodity-linked cyclicality. Return potential is closely tied to crude and natural-gas price trends, supply-demand balances, capital-discipline cycles, and policy developments around production, transport, and emissions. Historically, energy equities can aid portfolio diversification due to inflation and commodity sensitivities, and the group often exhibits elevated income characteristics, though distributions vary with cycle and corporate policy. Practical roles include a tactical sector tilt during periods of firming energy prices, an inflation-aware sleeve alongside real-asset exposures, or a diversification tool when broader equity leadership narrows. Suitable investors include macro-tilters employing sector rotation frameworks and income-oriented allocators comfortable with higher volatility and drawdowns tied to commodity moves. It generally benefits when supply constraints tighten balances or inflation expectations rise and can be challenged during global slowdowns or falling commodity prices. Key risk: industry concentration and methodology-driven reweights that can increase turnover.
