The underlying Nasdaq US Smart Pharmaceuticals Index targets a concentrated, factor-tilted portfolio of US pharmaceutical companies. The selection universe is US-listed common stocks classified in the pharmaceuticals industry within the Nasdaq US Benchmark Index that meet Nasdaq’s standard free-float and trading-volume investability screens. From this universe, the 30 stocks with the highest three-month average daily trading volume are retained for further analysis. Each candidate receives separate factor scores for value, volatility and growth using Nasdaq-defined fundamentals and price statistics; these are combined into a composite score, and the same 30 names form the final index. Constituents are then assigned modified factor weights that tilt toward stronger composite scores while constraining single-stock concentration and keeping the overall portfolio broadly invested across the industry. The index is reconstituted and rebalanced on a regular semi-annual schedule using updated liquidity and factor data.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Nasdaq Pharmaceuticals ETF (FTXH) targets the U.S. pharmaceuticals industry using a rules-based selection emphasizing company fundamentals and volatility characteristics within the drugmakers universe. The resulting portfolio provides focused exposure to firms with scale in branded therapeutics, diversified pipelines, and established commercialization capabilities, while retaining the industry’s defensive traits relative to broader cyclicals. Return drivers derive from R&D productivity, patent life-cycles, lifecycle management, and regulatory outcomes, with cash-flow durability partially offset by headline risk around pricing and competition. Investors may use it as a defensive equity sleeve to stabilize risk during late-cycle phases, as a sector satellite for healthcare allocation precision, or as a dividend-aware complement to core holdings (with the understanding that payout policies vary). Suitable profiles include risk-aware allocators seeking ballast that still participates in equity upside and healthcare specialists aiming for purer pharma exposure versus broader health-care mixes. It tends to fare better when economic growth moderates and quality cash flows are prized, and can lag in early-cycle rotations to cyclicals or during intense policy scrutiny. Key risk: industry concentration and event risk from clinical, legal, or pricing developments.
