The underlying Bloomberg Inflation Sensitive Equity Index targets U.S. exchange-listed equities expected to benefit from rising inflation. It starts from the Bloomberg US 3000 universe of common stocks and REITs on major U.S. exchanges, which requires at least 10% free float, minimum liquidity based on 100-day trading volume relative to float shares, and exclusion of investment companies and SPACs. Within the energy, industrials, materials and real estate sectors, issuers are ranked by free-float market cap, and the 50 largest per sector form the initial pool. Names in the lowest decile of debt-to-market-cap within each sector are removed. Remaining stocks receive an inflation-sensitivity score combining betas to 2-year inflation breakevens and the Bloomberg Commodity Index; the top half in each sector are retained. The 50 highest trailing 12-month free-cash-flow yields are then selected, with a 20-stock cap per sector, and are equally weighted and reconstituted semi-annually.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Bloomberg Inflation Sensitive Equity ETF (FTIF) delivers a systematic equity basket of U.S. companies in sectors historically positioned to benefit, directly or indirectly, from rising input and output prices. The rules-based process emphasizes energy, materials, industrials and real estate businesses tied to commodity production, infrastructure, capacity expansion and real-asset ownership, providing potential operating leverage to reflationary environments. The portfolio’s equal-weighted construction mitigates single-name dominance and tends to tilt toward cyclicals and value factors, with cash-flow sensitivity to commodity price trends, capital-spending cycles, and supply-demand tightness. Return characteristics can complement growth-led equity exposures and may help during episodes of persistent inflation or term-premium normalization, while disinflationary backdrops and falling commodity prices can be more challenging. In portfolios, FTIF can act as an inflation-aware satellite, a tactical overlay during reflationary regimes, or a real-asset-adjacent equity sleeve as part of an inflation-hedging toolkit. It may suit allocators seeking equity-based inflation sensitivity without using derivatives. A key risk to monitor is sector concentration, which can increase volatility and heighten dependence on commodity and construction cycles.
