The underlying The SMID Growth Strength Index targets well-capitalized US small- and mid-cap companies with strong balance sheets and persistent top-line growth. Eligible constituents must be members of either the Nasdaq US Small Cap Index or Nasdaq US Mid Cap Index, have free-float market cap at least 500 million USD, three-month ADVT ≥5 million USD, at least four years of trading history, and only one share class per company may be included. Additional balance-sheet filters require ≥100 million USD in cash or short-term investments, long-term-debt-to-market-cap below 30%, positive equity, revenue and cash flow, and ROE >10%. At each quarterly reconstitution, securities are ranked by three-year cash-flow growth and three-year revenue growth, summed into a combined rank; industry-level and tail-rank exclusions then narrow the list, and the 100 lowest-rank (strongest growth) names are selected, with a contingency process if too few pass the ROE test. The index is equal-weighted at each January, April, July and October rebalance, using prices on the third Friday of those months, with changes effective on the next trading day.

Investment Proposition

First Trust SMID Growth Strength ETF (FSGS) delivers systematic exposure to small- and mid-cap companies exhibiting durable growth characteristics supported by financial strength and profitability. The methodology emphasizes firms with consistent revenue and earnings expansion, healthy balance sheets, and favorable price dynamics, then applies disciplined construction to balance concentration and maintain style purity. This produces a tilt toward quality growth within the SMID universe—names positioned to compound through cycles yet still sensitive to valuation regimes and interest-rate expectations. Performance typically benefits from broadening economic activity, innovation cycles, and improving risk appetite, while phases dominated by deep value, rising discount rates, or narrow mega-cap leadership can be more challenging. In portfolios, FSGS can operate as a growth-tilt satellite complementing a SMID core, a factor completion sleeve to round out quality and momentum exposures, or a thematic-mandate building block for innovators beyond large-cap benchmarks. It is well-suited to allocators constructing balanced style mixes and advisors pursuing long-horizon growth targets with risk controls. A key risk to monitor is valuation sensitivity inherent in growth exposures, where multiple compression can detract even when fundamentals remain intact.
