The underlying NASDAQ AlphaDEX Asia Pacific Ex-Japan Index targets large- and mid-cap equities from developed Asia-Pacific markets excluding Japan using a multi-factor stock selection overlay. The starting universe is the Nasdaq Asia Pacific Ex-Japan Index. AlphaDEX methodology then ranks all eligible stocks separately on growth factors (3-, 6- and 12-month price appreciation, sales-to-price and one-year sales growth) and value factors (book-to-price, cash-flow-to-price and ROA), assigning each security a composite selection score based on its stronger style profile. The index retains the highest-scoring names, typically about 150 stocks, and splits them into quintiles by score. Roughly one-third of index weight goes to the top quintile and progressively smaller slices to lower quintiles, with equal weights within each quintile. Country and industry exposures are constrained to no more than about 15 percentage points above their weights in the parent index, and the index is reconstituted and rebalanced semi-annually.

Investment Proposition

First Trust Asia Pacific ex-Japan AlphaDEX Fund (FPA) presents equity exposure to developed Asia-Pacific markets excluding Japan using a rules-driven stock-selection process that emphasizes fundamental growth and value characteristics. The methodology ranks companies on measures such as sales growth, cash-flow trends, and valuation, then constructs a diversified portfolio intended to tilt toward companies with stronger factor profiles while capping position sizes and industries. This systematic approach can deviate materially from broad market weights, resulting in distinct sector and country allocations and higher turnover than traditional market-cap strategies. Investors should expect factor-cycle sensitivity and episodic tracking error, with outcomes influenced by regional currency moves and commodity dynamics that are common in this geography. FPA can serve as a satellite regional sleeve, a factor-completion tool within international equity, or a tactical allocation for investors seeking differentiated stock selection across Asia-Pacific ex-Japan. It may fit managers pursuing multi-factor diversification or allocators tilting toward valuation and earnings momentum outside the U.S. Factor-tilted strategies often excel when dispersion is high and fundamentals drive leadership, and may lag during narrow, momentum-only risk rallies. A fund-specific risk to monitor is capacity-related implementation and turnover costs from frequent rebalancing.
